Cal Poly golf program receives another scholarship donation

The Cal Poly men’s and women’s golf programs brought in another generous donation Wednesday afternoon.

More than two months after receiving a record $10.188 million gift from Bill and Cheryl Swanson, the Mustangs were given another substantial donation.

Frederick and Valerie Strain have endowed one full scholarship in perpetuity, which will fund the Sadie Strain Women’s Golf Scholarship and the Derick Strain Men’s Golf Scholarship, according to a news release from the school.

Sadie Strain is a current member of the women’s golf team, and Derick Strain competed for the Cal Poly men’s team prior to his graduation in 2013. The release said their scholarship will be awarded to intercollegiate golfers with “a preference to those in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences or the Orfalea College of Business.”

“All of our children have been educated at Cal Poly,” Valerie Strain said in the news release, “and having Derick and Sadie be student-athletes and work with Coach (Scott) Cartwright has been a great opportunity to prepare them for life after school.”

Last May, local golf enthusiasts and philanthropists Michael and Sammy Pineau donated $1.1 million to the Mustangs program. Cal Poly has now endowed 7.5 of the NCAA’s 10.5 available scholarships for men’s and women’s golf.
