Cal Poly softball team beats No. 9 Arizona for first time

The Cal Poly softball team bounced back from a rough Saturday to do something Sunday it had never done before — defeat ninth-ranked Arizona.

Sierra Hyland (4-2) allowed four hits and two walks while striking out nine in a 2-0 win Sunday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City.

The Mustangs (6-4), who were swept in their two games Saturday against Notre Dame and No. 8 UCLA, got an RBI-single from Hyland and a solo homer from Breana West in their first win over a ranked team since a 6-4 win over No. 8 Oregon on Feb. 7, 2014.

West went 2 for 2. Stephanie Heyward, Amanda Sandoval, Courtney Tyler and Ashley Torino also had hits for Cal Poly. Sandoval scored a run, and Tyler had a double and a walk.

The Mustangs lost both games Saturday, falling 6-3 to Notre Dame and 9-1 to UCLA.

Hyland allowed six runs on six hits against Notre Dame. She struck out six.

Chelsea Convissar had two hits for the Mustangs, and Torino, Makenna Young and Sandoval each had an RBI.

The Bruins scored nine runs in the first two innings in the second game. Heyward, West and Convissar had the only hits for Cal Poly.
