Cal Poly softball team wins two at Cathedral City tournament
Sierra Hyland tossed a shutout in the Cal Poly softball team’s win over Central Michigan, one of two wins for the Mustangs on Friday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate in Cathedral City.
Hyland (3-1) allowed just five hits and struck out nine in the 7-0 victory over the Chippewas. Chelsea Convissar went 2 for 3 with three RBI, all on a bases loaded triple in the third inning, and Ashley Tornio and Amanda Sandoval had two hits apiece.
In a 7-3 win over Army, Lindsey Chalmers (2-1) allowed three runs in five innings, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out four. Hyland went 2 for 3, including a three-run homer in the fifth inning, Convissar went 3 for 3 with two runs and Courtney Taylor was 2 for 3 with two RBI. Stephanie Heyward also had two hits for Cal Poly (5-2).
The Mustangs continue play at the tournament Saturday, against Notre Dame at 10 a.m. and UCLA at 5:30 p.m.
