Cal Poly football team adds Jeffrey, Boehm to 2016 recruiting class
More than two weeks after National Signing Day, the Cal Poly football team added two more standout prep recruits to its 2016 class, according to a release from the school Thursday morning.
Folsom High quarterback Jake Jeffrey and Great Oak High linebacker Ryan Boehm will both wear the Mustangs’ green and gold next fall, giving Cal Poly some added depth at two key positions.
A 6-foot, 180-pound signal caller, Jeffrey passed for more than 4,100 yards and 50 touchdowns during his senior season. He helped lead Folsom to a 14-1 record overall, a Sierra Foothill League title and the CIF-Sac-Joaquin Section Division I championship.
Jeffrey proved to be a dynamic athlete throughout his career, and he rushed for nearly 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns this past fall. As a junior in 2014, Jeffrey caught 65 passes from current Washington Huskies quarterback Jake Browning, totaling 859 yards and 14 touchdowns.
“Jeffrey is extremely athletic and will get the opportunity to play a lot of positions at Cal Poly,” head coach Tim Walsh said in the release. “As good as he is at quarterback, he has the skill set to play other positions as well.”
Jeffrey is the next in a long line of Folsom graduates who played football at Cal Poly. Fifth-year senior Dano Graves earned national player of the year recognition during his prep days at Folsom High, and 2016 graduates Burton De Koning and Stephen Sippel also came from Folsom.
Boehm, a 6-2, 225-pound linebacker, was a force on defense for Great Oak. He made 89 total tackles as a senior, including 31 for lost yardage to go with 13 sacks and 21 quarterback hurries.
Boehm made a season-high 21 tackles against Temecula and forced six fumbles throughout the season. He was verbally committed to Cal Poly in the weeks leading up to signing day, but accepted a preferred walk-on spot at UCLA on Feb. 3.
Now two weeks later, Boehm is officially set to become a Mustang.
“After recent events and further discussion, I will not be walking on at UCLA,” Boehm posted on his Twitter account. “I hope everyone respects my decision. I am proud to say I will be attending Cal Poly. This is my final decision.”
Cuesta women fall in home finale
The Cuesta College women’s basketball team closed out its final home game of the regular season with 60-55 loss to Allan Hancock on Wednesday night.
The Cougars led 39-30 at halftime, but were outscored by 12 in the decisive third quarter and never fully recovered.
Former San Luis Obispo High standout Biba Kirschner led three Cuesta players in double figures with a game-high 18 points. She also grabbed five rebounds and had four steals in the setback.
Sophomore Kendra Losa added 15 points, and Templeton High alum Autumn Russell recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in 39 minutes.
The Cougars are 8-19 overall and 3-8 against Western State Conference opponents heading into Saturday’s season finale at third-place Moorpark.
