Pac-12 opponent Oregon State added to Cal Poly’s 2019 nonconference football schedule
The Cal Poly football team will travel to Pac-12 country again in the not-too-distant future.
The Mustangs, who played Arizona State in Tempe this past fall, have added a trip to Oregon State for a nonconference football game during the 2019 season, according to a news release from the school Wednesday morning.
Cal Poly will go to Reser Stadium in Corvallis, Ore., on Sept. 14, 2019.
“Anytime we can schedule a game against a Pac-12 school is a great opportunity for us to showcase our program,” head coach Tim Walsh said in the release. “I think we have proven over the years that we can compete at that level.”
When the Mustangs took on Arizona State in early September, the Chris Brown-led offense kept the Sun Devils on their heels for the better part of three quarters. Cal Poly eventually fell 35-21, but the Mustangs went toe-to-toe with one of the Pac-12 South favorites in every facet of the game.
Oregon State experienced a trying 2015 season under first-year head coach Gary Andersen. The Beavers went 2-10 overall and were winless in their nine Pac-12 games. Cal Poly and Oregon State have never met on the football field.
Other future Mustang football games against FBS-level opponents include the 2016 season opener at Nevada; at San Jose State in 2017; and at Cal in 2020.
“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to play Oregon State,” Walsh said, “and the game will give our program great exposure.”
Two Mustangs headed to Team USA tryouts
Cal Poly volleyball standouts Taylor Nelson and Adlee Van Winden have an exciting weekend on the horizon.
The two all-Big West Conference performers are scheduled to compete at the three-day U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryouts, beginning Friday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
Nelson and Van Winden will be two of the nearly 240 athletes from 88 colleges and universities competing for placement on the Women’s National Team, as well as the U.S. Collegiate National and Junior National Teams, both domestic and international.
Athletes chosen for the next step of the process will be notified early next month, and USA Volleyball is expected to release the final rosters by the end of March.
Nelson, a sophomore from Granite Bay, garnered first-team all-conference recognition during the fall after leading the Mustangs with 1,053 assists and 31 services aces.
Nelson’s two-year assist total of 1,932 ranks seventh on the program’s all-time list.
Van Winden, a Napa native, turned in one of the best freshman seasons in Cal Poly history and earned Big West Freshman of the Year honors. Her team-leading 391 kills and 3.91 kills per set ranked fourth among conference competitors.
Three-time Olympic gold medalist Karch Kiraly and the U.S. Women’s National Team coaching staff will direct the camp, which will be streamed live on the USA Volleyball website.
