College roundup: Cal Poly softball teams ends Tempe tournament with a win

The Cal Poly softball team got a dominant performance from pitcher Sierra Hyland in a 7-3 win over Oregon State in its finale at the Kajikawa Classic on Sunday in Tempe, Ariz.

Hyland (2-1) struck 13, allowing four hits and two walks and three earned runs.

The Mustangs (3-2) staked her to a 7-1 lead after a five-run bottom of the third inning. Betsy Colburn went 2 for 3 with a double, two RBI and two runs. Ashley Torino was 1 for 2 with two runs, and Courtney Taylor was 2 for 4 with a run.

Oregon State (3-1) scored two runs in the sixth inning, but were done in by four errors in the game.

Cal Poly split two games on Saturday.

The Mustangs (2-2) lost to Stanford 6-4 in the first game. Sierra Hyland (1-1) struck out nine in a complete game, but allowed six runs — four earned — on six hits and eight walks. Hyland helped her own cause by going 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI. Mckenna Young also had an RBI for the Mustangs.

In the second game, Cal Poly beat New Mexico 2-0. Lindsey Chalmers (1-1) threw a five-hit shutout, walking two and striking out seven. Stephanie Heyward was 3 for 4 with an RBI, Breana West had two hits and Young picked up another RBI.

Cal Poly wrestling team gets first Pac-12 victory

The Mustangs defeated Boise State 23-15 on Sunday in an outdoor meet at the University Union plaza.

Colt Schilling pinned Jake Velarde in 1 minute, 43 seconds, for his 10th win of the season at 141 pounds. Mitch Woods (184 pounds), Travis Berridge (174), J.T. Goodwin (197), Spencer Empey (284) and Jason DelaCruz (133) also won for the Mustangs (3-9, 1-4 Pac-12).

Cal Poly lost 24-12 to Arizona State in a Pac-12 meet Saturday night at Mott Athletics Center.

Colt Shorts won 3-1 over Oliver Pierce at 157 pounds, and Travis Berridge won 4-1 over Preston McCalmon at 174 pounds for the Mustangs (2-9, 0-4 Pac-12).

J.T. Goodwin won by forfeit at 197 pounds.

Arizona State (11-7, 2-2 Pac-12) won the first four bouts of the meet.

Cal Poly men’s tennis team beats Loyola Marymount

The Mustangs rolled to a 6-1 win Sunday in Los Angeles.

Ben Donovan and Corey Pang won a doubles match, as did Karl Enander and Dan Cardiff.

Josh Ortlip, Axel Damiens, Garrett Auproux, Pang and Donovan all won their singles matches for Cal Poly (3-4).
