Cal Poly men’s basketball team opens road trip with loss at Saint Mary’s

The Cal Poly men’s basketball team opened a 12-day, six-game road trip by losing 93-63 to Saint Mary’s on Monday night in Moraga.

Luke Meikle’s 18 points led the Mustangs (5-4), who were trailing 46-27 at halftime. Meikle also had a team-high six rebounds. Brian Bennett added 15 points and five rebounds.

Calvin Hermanson had a career-best 23 points, including five 3-pointers, for Saint Mary’s (7-1), and Emmett Naar had 18 points and a career-high 11 assists.

Hermanson made three 3-pointers during a 13-2 run to open the game. A 12-3 spurt later in the half, during which Hermanson, Naar and Evan Fitzner each hits 3s, made it 41-23. Saint Mary’s, which never trailed, led by double figures the rest of the way.

The Mustangs allowed the Gaels to shoot 60.3 percent from the floor, including 19-of-31 from 3-point range. The Gaels recorded or tied season highs for field goals made (35), 3-pointers made (19), 3-point field goal percent (61.3) and assists (28).

Cal Poly travels to USC for a game Thursday at 7 p.m.
