Cal Poly women’s basketball beats Pepperdine 61-47 in Malibu
Junior forward Hannah Gilbert grabbed her fourth double-double in seven games, and the Cal Poly women’s basketball team defeated Pepperdine 61-47 in Malibu on Wednesday.
The Mustangs (4-3) improved to 3-1 on the road with the win at Firestone Fieldhouse and are 3-0 when holding their opponents under 60 points.
Gilbert contributed to a shutdown defensive performance by the Mustangs with 12 boards, while also adding 17 points. Gilbert was averaging 11.2 rebounds per game coming into Wednesday’s contest, which puts her at No. 20 nationally in that category.
Cal Poly pulled away from the Waves in the fourth quarter, with sophomore Dynn Leaupepe and senior Beth Balbierz hitting key three-pointers with under five minutes to play. Balbierz then drained another 3-pointer with 1:09 remaining, putting the game out of reach at 58-45.
Leaupepe had 13 points, five rebounds and three assists on the night.
The Mustangs host Fresno State at Mott Athletics Center at 4 p.m. Saturday.
