Cal Poly’s Joel Awich is Big West player of the week

Cal Poly’s Joel Awich, who averaged 18.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in helping the men’s basketball team to two wins at the Jim Maui Invitational regional round, was named the Big West Conference Player of the Week, the school annnounced Monday.

Awich, who was named the tournament’s regional round MVP, scored 19 points in Cal Poly’s win over Northern Colorado on Saturday, then had 18 points and nine rebounds in the Mustangs’ victory Sunday over Maryland-Baltimore County.

In addition, Awich had 17 points in Cal Poly’s win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Nov. 18.

Early in the season, Awich rankes sixth among Big West players with 15.8 points per game and eighth with 6.0 rebounds per game.
