Cal Poly women’s basketball team falls to Cal in Berkeley

The Cal Poly women’s basketball team rallied from a 19-point deficit, but couldn’t keep the momentum going in an 82-57 loss to 21st-ranked Cal on Sunday in Berkeley.

The Mustangs (2-2) went on a 17-3 run over the second and third quarters to cut a 35-16 lead down to five, but Cal closed the quarter on a 26-13 run, effectively ending the Mustangs’ comeback hopes.

Beth Balbierz scored 14 points to lead Cal Poly, and Lisa Marie Sanchez scored 11 points and had six assists. Dynn Leaupepe scored 12 points off the bench.

Asha Thomas scored 19 points to lead Cal (4-0), which set a team record with 14 3-pointers in the win.

Cal Poly plays its home opener on Friday at 3 p.m. in the first game of the ShareSLO Holiday Tournament.
