Cal Poly’s Zach Cootes breaks school swimming record

Cal Poly sophomore Zach Cootes set a school record in men’s 200-yard butterfly, helping the Mustangs men’s swim team to earn third place at the A3 Performance Invitational on Saturday night in Monterey Park.

Cootes finished in fifth place in the event, touching the wall in 1 minute, 48.01 seconds — 0.27 seconds faster than Justin deDianous’ record.

Mickey Mackle was fourth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:03.33, and Pearu Pold was fifth in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 15:32.06.

The Mustangs scored 857 points, behind winners Stanford (2,016) and second-place UC Santa Barbara (1,093).

The women’s team finished seventh with 616 points. Bonnie Diamond was third in the 1,650 free in 16:50.62, the second-fastest time in school history.

Sage Speak took fifth in the 200 breast, with a time of 2:16.77.
