Cal Poly men’s basketball team wins regional championship of Jim Maui Invitational

Playing the University of Maryland-Baltimore College was a new experience for the Cal Poly men’s basketball team, as the squads faced each other for the first time Sunday in the regional round championship game of Jim Maui Invitational in Greeley, Colo.

The Mustangs showed no discomfort, though, beating the Retrievers 78-65 to win the tournament’s regional title.

Joel Awich scored a game-high 18 points, and Ridge Shipley scored 15 points on five 3-pointers for Cal Poly (3-2), which hit the 70-point mark for the fifth consecutive game to start the season.

Cal Poly shot a season best 55.6 percent from 3-point range and 50 percent from the field.

Taylor Sutlive scored 11 points for the Mustangs. Awich had a team-high nine rebounds, and David Nwaba led Cal Poly with eight assists.

Joe Sherburne had 19 points to lead UMBC (1-4).

Cal Poly returns to Mott Athletics Center and to open a three-game home stand, beginning Nov. 28 versus NAIA school University of Antelope Valley at 7:30 p.m.
