Former Cal Poly point guard Amaurys Fermin recently signed a contract to play for San Pedro de Macoris, a professional team in the Dominican Republic.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

San Pedro de Macoris was the runner-up in the eight-team Liga Dominicana de Baloncesto last season.

Fermin, who is from the Dominican Republic, played for his country at a regional tournament in June but was not selected to play on the team for Olympic qualifying. He could be on the team when it plays the United States in an exhibition game Thursday, according to a news release from Cal Poly.

In Olympic qualifying, Ike Diogu scored 25 points, and Nigeria earned the final men’s basketball spot in the London Olympics with an 88-73 victory over the Dominican Republic.

Yack Martinez led the Dominican Republic, coached by Kentucky coach John Calipari, with 16 points.
