Cal Poly falls to Portland State football despite an early comeback and turnovers

Portland State sent Cal Poly football to its seventh straight loss, beating the Mustangs 42-21 on Saturday afternoon at Hillsboro Stadium.

In a Big Sky contest filled with turnovers and penalties on both sides, the Mustangs (1-7, 0-5 Big Sky) came back from an early deficit, but could not charge past the Vikings (4-4, 3-2) to victory.

With Portland State up 14-0 and less than one minute to go in the first quarter, Chris Coleman caught a 75-yard pass from Spencer Brasch for a touchdown.

Cal Poly tied the score three minutes into the first quarter. Xavier Moore caught a 27-yard pass on fourth down, then Sam Stewart made a 2-yard run to score.

Vikings quarterback Davis Alexander added two touchdowns off short runs in 10-play drives to build a 28-14 lead. Darian Chase extended Portland State’s lead with a 12-yard touchdown.

While Cal Poly’s Adam Garwood caught a 3-yard touchdown pass to make the contest a 14-point game, Portland State completed the socring with a 25-yard touchdown run.

Brasch completed 19 of 23 passes for 287 yards. Giancarlo Woods had five receptions while Coleman and Shakobe Harper caught three passes each.

Each team committed four turnovers and totaled 17 penalties for 158 yards. Tommy Griffin and Aaron Cooper each intercepted a Viking pass and Xavier Oliphant recovered a fumble for Cal Poly.

Jeremy Justice made nine tackles and Matt Shotwell seven. Shotwell’s career total is 305, as he stands at No. 6 in program records.

Cal Poly’s next and final away game is at Sacramento State at 6:05 p.m. Nov. 6.
