Cal Poly wide receiver signs NFL contract with 2018 Super Bowl team

A Cal Poly wide receiver has earned a spot on a National Football League team that went to the Super Bowl two years ago.

J.J. Koski, the Mustangs’ most valuable player in 2019, signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Rams, who lost to the New England Patriots 13-3 in 2018.

Koski, who went undrafted, inked his contract less than an hour after the conclusion of the NFL’s virtual, seven-round draft.

Koski was contacted by several NFL teams prior to the draft, Cal Poly officials said.

”I think this is a great spot for me,” Koski said in a news release issued by Cal Poly. “There were several good opportunities for me elsewhere, but I think this is the best fit for me.”

Koski was hoping to be the first Mustang drafted in the NFL since cornerback Asa Jackson. Jackson was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2012 draft.

“Hey, it’s all good,” Koski said in the news release. “I already signed a deal with the Rams.”

Koski, Cal Poly’s leading receiver over the past three years, is the 15th Mustang since 2000 to sign a free agent contract with an NFL team, according to university officials.

Slot back Kyle Lewis signed with the Detroit Lions in 2017. Linebacker Nick Dzubnar played five seasons with the (San Diego and Los Angeles) Chargers before becoming a free agent following the 2019 season. Dzubnar signed with the Tennessee Titans last month.

Koski earned first-team All-Big Sky Conference honors in November. The fifth-year senior caught 42 passes for 868 yards and eight touchdowns in 2019. The San Ramon Valley High senior recorded 121 receptions, 2,311 yards and 18 touchdowns in his Mustang career.

Koski earned a business administration degree with a concentration in accounting, graduating in the fall. He will join the Rams for virtual meetings in early May.
