Cal Poly to introduce new head football coach Wednesday
Cal Poly will introduce its new head football coach on Wednesday.
The university will announce the university’s 17th football coach at 5 p.m. at the Recreation Center’s Multi-Activity Center, located at the corner of Slack Street and Hathway Avenue on the south side of the Cal Poly campus.
The public is invited to attend the event.
The name of the coach hasn’t been released by Cal Poly officials. But the new hire is believed to be Cal’s offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin, which a Cal Poly source confirmed Tuesday.
Baldwin has served as the offensive coordinator, assistant head coach and running backs coach at Cal since 2017, helping guide former Mission Prep star Patrick Laird to more than 2,000 yards rushing and a school-record 99 receptions as a running back for the Golden Bears.
Laird recently scored his first touchdown as a running back for the Miami Dolphins.
Before taking the Cal job in the Pac-12 Conference, Baldwin led Eastern Washington to Big Sky Conference titles in five different seasons as the program’s head coach.
He also led Eastern Washington to its first NCAA Division I Football Championship (Subdivision) with a 20–19 come-from-behind victory over Delaware in 2010-11.
Cal Poly currently plays in the Big Sky Conference, having finished in a tie for last place with a 2-6 record in 2019. Cal Poly had an overall 3-8 record in 2019.
Former Cal Poly coach Tim Walsh announced his retirement in November after 11 years at the helm.
“While I do wish we had won more football games, (Walsh) has made a dramatic impact upon the lives of hundreds of young men at Cal Poly,” said Athletic Director Don Oberhelman. “We are all better for having the opportunity to work with him.”
Cal Poly President Jeff Armstrong and Oberhelman will introduce the new head coach at the news conference. The coach will then offer introductory remarks, before a media question-and-answer session.
