Cal Poly wrestling falls to Army in outdoor meet at University Union plaza
Army won seven of 10 bouts — two by major decision — en route to a 23-10 victory over Cal Poly in a non-conference dual wrestling meet outdoors on a sunny Friday afternoon in Cal Poly’s University Union plaza.
The Black Knights (1-2) jumped to an 11-0 lead in the opening three bouts and never looked back as Cal Poly fell to 3-4 on the year.
Mustang winners were Yoshito Funakoshi and Joshy Cortez by decision and Travis Berridge by a major decision.
Funakoshi tallied five takedowns, an escape and riding time for a 12-6 victory over Austin Harry at 133 pounds.
Cortez’s victory was a bit more dramatic as he wiped out a 3-0 deficit and had a riding point against him with 10 seconds remaining. Cortez scored a takedown with eight seconds to go and was awarded a four-point near fall at the buzzer for a 6-4 triumph over Mathew Kelly at 149 pounds.
Travis Berridge notched a pair of takedowns, two reversals, a four-point near fall and riding time for a 13-5 major decision over Ben Harvey at 174 pounds. Berridge extended a 2-1 lead with a reversal and four-point near fall early in the second period to take control of the match.
Five of Army’s wins by decision were by four points or less. Rocco Caywood at 197 pounds and Trevor Smith at 285 won by major decision in the opening two bouts of the dual meet.
Cal Poly will compete in three tournaments over the next five weeks, beginning with the Roadrunner Open on Sunday at Clovis North High School.
