Cal Poly goalkeeper wins Big West Defensive Player of the Week

Cal Poly goalkeeper Eric Kam was selected Monday as the Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week following his strong performance during the Mustangs’ home upset of sixth-ranked UCLA.

It was the first Big West weekly honor for Kam, a fourth-year junior from Ventura who has not allowed a goal in 237 consecutive minutes. He made two saves in a 1-0 win against the Bruins, Cal Poly’s final nonconference match that was played in front of more than 7,000 fans Friday at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

Kam preserved the shutout with a key stop against UCLA’s Abu Danladi with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. He ranks second in the Big West in goals against average (0.96) and save percentage (.762).

The Mustangs (2-4-1) open Big West play at 7 p.m. Thursday at Cal State Fullerton (4-5).
