College roundup: Cuesta College baseball’s winning streak ends in 22-1 loss to Moorpark

The Cuesta College baseball team had its seven-game winning streak ended by in convincing fashion in a 22-1 loss Saturday at home against. Moorpark.

The Raiders scored 15 runs over the first four innings and finished with 19 hits. Cougar freshman Jake Niezen made his first start of the year and lasted only four outs. Cuesta used five relievers over the course of the game.

Moorpark’s Kodi Koorndyk allowed one run and two hits, and struck out seven for his first win of the year. Designated hitter Riley Conlan and first baseman Dalton Duarte combined for six hits, eight runs and nine RBI for the Raiders.

Cuesta’s lone run came after a two-out walk by Dustin Miller, who scored on a Garrett Giovannelli double. The Cougars had allowed only 16 runs on the previous seven games combined.

Cuesta leads the Western State Conference standings by two games with six games to play. The Cougars play at Ventura on Tuesday.

Poly beach volleyball defeats Sacramento State, Boise State

The Cal Poly beach volleyball team defeated Sacramento State and Boise State on Saturday, each by the score of 3-2 at Livermore Community Park.

Cal Poly (6-9) had three teams win two matchups, led by the tandem of sophomore Taylor Nelson and freshman Adlee Van Winden. Savannah Niemen and Anna Gorman also had a pair of wins, as did the team of Raeann Griesen and Katherine Brouker.

Nelson and Van Winden won against Sacramento State in three, 21-16, 16-21, 15-8, to beat the duo of Sloan Lovett and Maddie Cannon. Niemen and Gorman beat Lauren Aikels and Morgan Stanley 21-19, 23-21 and Greisen and Brouker topped Lexie Skalbeck and Lana Brown in two, 21-14, 21-15.

Against Boise State, Cal Poly dropped two out of three the opening sets before coming back to win. Nelson and Van Winden came back to win 22-24, 21-19, 15-13, over Maddy O’Donnell and Hannah Hubbard.

Niemen and Gorman dropped their first set to Sierra Nobely and Sarah Baugh, before rallying 15-21, 21-19, 15-10. Greisen and Brouker teamed up to beat Kaitlyn Oliver and Maddi Osburn, 22-20, 15-21, 15-7.

Cal Poly hosts CSU Bakersfield at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 22.

Poly men’s tennis rallies to beat UC Davis

The Cal Poly men’s tennis team rallied to beat UC Davis 4-3 behind four singles victories on Saturday.

Poly’s Josh Ortlip clinched the match with a three-set win over Bryce McKelvie, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

The Mustangs (13-8, 4-0) remain undefeated in conference play and have not lost since March 26.

UC Davis won the doubles point, but junior Garrett Auproux snagged a single victory with a 6-1, 6-4 win over James Wade to even the match. The Aggies retook the lead when Everett Maltby won in straight sets over Cal Poly’s Axel Damiens 6-3, 6-3.

Corey Pang won his 12th consecutive match up for the Mustangs with a 7-6 (1), 6-1 decision over Brett Bacharach tying the match once again. Cal Poly junior Ben Donovan added a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win over Alec Adamson for the Mustang’s first lead of the day. Ortlip clinched the win with his win over McKelvie.

Cal Poly will host UC Santa Barbara, who is also undefeated in conference play, at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
