College baseball roundup: Cal Poly loses series opener, Cuesta wins
The Cal Poly baseball team dropped the opening game of a three-game nonconference series with a 6-0 loss to Wichita State on Thursday night.
The Shockers (7-14) held Cal Poly to just five hits and scored three times in the third inning, once in the seventh and added two more in the eighth.
Willie Schwanke pitched eight innings for Wichita State, retiring the side in order three of his final four innings. Schwanke allowed five hits, struck out six and walked two.
Dylan Doherty had two of the Mustangs’ five hits, both singles, and John Schuknecht had a double.
Justin Bruihl lost in his first collegiate start, allowing three runs in the third inning. Austin Dondanville pitched four innings in relief, allowing one run, three hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
The second game of the series will be Friday at 4:35 p.m.
Cuesta College 9, Fresno City College 2
Cuesta defeated Fresno City to wrap up the Hancock/Cuesta Spring Break Tournament.
Third baseman Josh Medina was 2 for 3 with five RBI for the Cougars (14-9), and San Luis Obispo High grad Garrett Giovannelli was 3 for 3 with three runs and an RBI. Dustin Miller was 3 for 5 with two runs.
Anthony Baleto (2-2) allowed four hits and two runs — one earned — in five innings to pick up the win. He struck out two.
Efrain Del Rio (1-2) allowed six runs in 1 2/3 innings for the Rams (13-8).
