College softball roundup: Cal Poly, Cuesta sweep doubleheaders
The Cal Poly softball team took two games at the Libby Matson Tournament on Saturday, beating Cal State Bakersfield 5-0 and Purdue 5-3 to complete the double header.
Sierra Hyland struck out 10 in the opening victory against Cal State Bakersfield (3-5) to improve to 6-2 on the year. Highland had an RBI-double in the bottom of the first to get the Mustangs on the board and Breana West hit a sac-fly to put Cal Poly up 2-0.
Hyland added an RBI-single in the third, followed by a West double to score a pair of runs for a 5-0 lead.
Hyland allowed two hits and walked two over the complete-game seven inning outing, in her fourth game this season with double-digits strikeouts.
In the second game of the double header against Purdue (7-5), Courtney Tyler singled with one out to score Stephanie Heyward, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Amanda Sandoval hit a two-out solo home run before West singled home Tyler in the third.
Lindsey Chalmers (4-2) earned the win, giving up seven hits over 4 2/3 innings, striking out three and allowing three earned runs. Hyland pitched the final 2 1/3 innings for her first save of the year, striking out six.
The Mustangs wrap up the tournament on Sunday against Pacific at 11:15 a.m.
Cuesta sweeps home doubleheader
Demi Danell tossed a shutout as Cuesta earned a 1-0 win over Santa Monica in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday in San Luis Obispo, then the Cougars scored 19 runs in a 19-5 win in the second game.
Danell struck out 14 in the complete-game win. The Cougars (9-4) scored the game’s lone run in the first inning, when Sabina Ybarra led off with a double and then scored when Santa Monica misplayed Cheyenna Hufstetler’s fly ball.
Mariah Solis was 2 for 2 with three RBI, and Hufstetler was 2 for 2 with three RBI and three runs in the second game. Ami Hood and Kassi Kuhnhofer-Sanchez had three runs apiece, and Kuhnhofer-Sanchez, Ybarra and Danell had two RBI each.
