College baseball roundup: Cal Poly beats Michigan and is routed by UCLA, Cuesta beats Allan Hancock

It was an up-and-down day for the Cal Poly baseball team Saturday.

The Mustangs beat No. 19 ranked Michigan 5-1 in a non-conference game in the early game of the day, handing Michigan its first loss of the season. Then Cal Poly was crushed 19-0 by No. 14 UCLA in the nightcap.

Cal Poly (5-2) started Slater Lee against the Bruins (3-2). Lee allowed eight runs in four innings, giving up eight hits and walking three. Cal Poly pitchers walked seven in the game.

The Mustangs managed just four hits, two by Brett Barbier.

UCLA had 18 hits.

In the first game, the Wolverines (5-1) walked 13 Mustangs batters, and Cal Poly took full advantage, despite being held to five hits for the game.

Michigan starter Brett Adcock walked six of the first 10 batters he faced and finished with nine walks over 3 1/3 innings. Relievers Jayce Vancena and William Tribucher each walked a pair of batters.

Barbier and John Schuknecht each had two RBI for the Mustangs. Barbier had a RBI single in the fourth and was hit by a pitch in the sixth with the bases loaded. Schuknencht had a two-run single in the sixth.

Freshman Cam Scheider (1-0) earned his first collegiate win, throwing five shutout innings, striking out four and walking three. Freshman Justin Bruihl earned the save, his first of his collegiate career, over four innings, allowing an unearned run in the ninth, walking two and striking out three.

Cal Poly committed four errors, one allowing Michigan to breakup the shutout in the ninth.

Cuesta 10, Allan Hancock 7

The Cuesta College baseball team beat Allan Hancock 10-7 to complete a two-game sweep to start the Western State Conference schedule on Saturday.

Cougars starting pitcher Louis Raymond shutout the Bulldogs for six innings, and Cuesta led 5-0 entering the seventh inning. The shutout was broken in the seventh when the Bulldogs erupted for four runs.

Allan Hancock took the lead in the eighth 7-5 on a three-run double. In the bottom of the inning, Cuesta responded with a two-run single by San Luis Obispo High grad Garret Giovanelli and a two-run double by Hunter Reade.

Cuesta reliever Anthony Baleto earned the save, striking out the side in the ninth.

The Cougars play at Santa Barbara City College on Tuesday at 2 p.m. and turn around and host the Vaqueros on Thursday at 2 p.m.
