Cal Poly baseball cracks top-25 national rankings from Perfect Game USA
Cal Poly’s baseball team continues to roll, and now they’re getting noticed on the national stage.
The Mustangs (26-9 overall, 14-1 Big West Conference) earned the No. 25 ranking nationally in NCAA collegiate baseball by Perfect Game USA this week.
Cal Poly is coming off of winning two of three games against the University of Hawaii, which snapped a 12-game Mustangs conference win streak with a 4-2 win on April 11, but the Mustangs followed with 12-5 and 5-2 victories to clinch the series over the Rainbow Warriors.
Cal Poly then posted a 1-0 victory Tuesday over non-conference opponent Santa Clara.
Cal Poly is one of three California teams ranked in the Top 25 by Perfect Game, including UCLA (No. 9) and UC Irvine (No. 14), the only other Big West program on the list (25-9, 13-2).
The last time Cal Poly baseball was ranked nationally was at the end of the 2022 season, when the Mustangs came in at No. 18 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll.
The Mustangs’ high-powered offense includes six batters hitting over .330: Nate Castellon and Ryan Fenn (both at .331), Cam Hoiland (.339), Jack Collins (.346), Alejandro Garza (.349) and Zack Daudet (.410).
Daudet has been out of the lineup in recent games with a pinched nerve in his neck, but his replacement at first base, Jack Downing, has filled in well, hitting .368 in 57 at bats.
On Tuesday, Troy Cooper, Josh Morano and Tanner Sagouspe combined for the shutout on the mound.
The Mustangs next face UCSB (24-11, 13-6 Big West) in a three-game series in Santa Barbara starting Thursday at 4:30 p.m. followed by contests against the Gauchos on Friday and Saturday.
Brooks Lee hits HR for the Twins in MLB
Meanwhile, Coach Larry Lee’s son, Brooks Lee, cracked a solo home run on Tuesday for the Minnesota Twins, a 386-foot blast over the right field wall, in a 6-3 win over the Mets at Target Field in Minneapolis.
Lee just returned to the Twins this week after missing the first 15 games while on the injured list with a lumbar strain, according to MLB.com.
