Cal Poly sports events canceled indefinitely to prevent coronavirus spread

Cal Poly sporting events have been suspended immediately with the announcement by the Big West Conference that all spring conference and non-conference competitions also are on hold effective immediately — citing concerns over coronavirus exposure.

The suspension, which includes conference and non-conference events, starts with Thursday night’s baseball game against Oklahoma at home at Baggett Stadium, as well as a home softball contest versus Notre Dame.

“The main priority of the Big West Conference continues to be the health, safety and wellness of our student-athletes, coaches, administrators, fans and media as we continue to monitor all developing and relevant information on the COVID-19 virus,” conference commissioner Dennis Farrell said in a news release.

The announcement comes as the NCAA March Madness tournament has been canceled.

All individual game tickets will be refunded over the coming weeks, the university stated.

“Season ticket holders should hold onto their ticket in the event that the season resumes,” Cal Poly officials stated. “Refunds will be provided to season ticket holders on a pro-rated basis once a final determination has been made on the rest of the season.”

Additional updates regarding Cal Poly Athletics events will be published on GoPoly.com as they become available, university officials stated.

The Cal Poly women’s basketball team (11-18) was making a surprise run, winning its first two games in the Big West Tournament as the conference’s eighth seed.

The Mustangs beat top-seeded Long Beach State 59-48 on Tuesday in Long Beach, and topped UC Irvine 70-49, also in Long Beach, on Wednesday to move on to the semifinals.

Cal Poly was scheduled to play UC Davis at Honda Center in Anaheim on Friday in a semifinal matchup.
