San Luis Obispo senior Andy Eppright shot a 7-over 79 to win medalist honors in the boys golf regular season finale, but it wasn’t enough to get a win over Arroyo Grande. Led by a pair of 83s by brothers Jack and Owen Avrit, Arroyo Grande squeaked outa four-stroke win Thursday, 429-433.

Course conditions were tough when the teams teed off at San Luis Obsipo County Club in the late afternoon. The wind was howling and hovered around 15-20 miles per hour all day, a three-club difference on into-the-wind shots. Along with the wind speeds, the stakes were also high.

Arroyo Grande had already locked up its fourth-straight PAC 8 championship, but the Eagles wanted to end the season undefeated. San Luis Obispo wanted badly to beat its long-time rival.

Junior Jack Avrit’s 83 was his worst round of the season by far. His previous high was 76. But his teammates, and his brother, picked him up. All six Eagles shot in the 80s; Gabe Zufall shot 87, Andrew Burdick shot 88 and Raleigh Deering shot 88.

“In a true individual sport we have really embraced the team concept,” Arroyo Grande coach Jeff Byars said. “It’s nice to win on their home course and it’s nice to finish the year undefeated.”

Jack Avrit was frustrated by the wind and said the conditions were the hardest he had seen all season. His score, and golf balls, paid the price. After a three-putt on the Par 3 15th, he tossed his ball into the lake.

“If there was a time to (shoot a high score), this was it. Get it out before CIF,” Jack Avrit said.

San Luis Obispo had two rounds in the 90s that ended up costing them a chance at spoiling Arroyo Grande’s perfect league season. Eppright’s playing partner Coleman Godfrey shot an 84 while Casey Leebrick carded an 87.

Next week, on May 3-4, the players will begin the postseason with a CIF Southern Section Individual Qualifier.

BOYS TENNIS Arroyo Grande 9, Atascadero 9 (AG wins in tiebreaker, 77-68)

The Arroyo Grande boys tennis team clinched its first PAC 8 league title since 2013 in a close win over Atascadero on Thursday. The Eagles also won the CIF Division 3 title in 2013, beating San Luis Obispo 13-5. Arroyo Grande won four league titles between the 2010 and 2013 seasons.

Andrew Arcangel swept in singles, handing Atascadero’s Brendan Adams one of his few losses this year at 6-4. Arcangel won his other sets 6-0, 6-2.

Parker Turner and Patrick Angle took two out of three for the Eagles 5-7, 6-1, 6-1, and Tyler Tencati and Joseph Goryance won a pair of sets 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. The team of Austin Bricker and Joey Kullman dropped a set 2-6, before winning 6-3, 6-0, for Arroyo Grande (19-3, 13-0 PAC 8).

“(Winning the league title) came from a lot of work and time put in, having to pull out these tight matches has been beneficial,” coach Lori Hollister said. “We’ve learned to roll the ball under pressure and start consistent and that’s helped us.

“We had to start from scratch.”

The team has three seniors, in addition to several juniors who are just playing tennis for the first time, and both a freshman and a sophomore.

Adams won two other sets 6-0, 6-0, and Christian Wisberg also won two out of three, 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 for Atascadero.
