Late 3-pointer lifts Cal State Northridge past visiting Cal Poly in men’s basketball

Jerron Wilbut made the go-ahead 3-pointer with 18 seconds remaining and Cal State Northridge rallied to defeat visiting Cal Poly, 76-74, in a Big West Conference men’s basketball game Thursday night inside the Matadome.

The Matadors (7-12, 2-3 Big West) erased an 11-point deficit with less than 10 minutes remaining and closed the game with a 15-6 run. The Mustangs (7-10, 1-3 Big West) had one final look at the basket to force overtime, but senior guard Reese Morgan missed a layup with 7 seconds to go.

Seniors David Nwaba and Brian Bennett each scored 14 points for Cal Poly, which shot a season-high 53.7 percent from the field (29 of 54). Bennett also grabbed seven rebounds and moved within six points of becoming the 22nd player in Mustangs history to score 1,000 points in a career.

Fellow senior Joel Awich came off the bench to score nine points, and sophomore Taylor Sutlive added eight.

Wilbut’s 15 points led four Cal State Northridge players in double figures.

Cal Poly will take on Cal State Fullerton at 4 p.m. Saturday. That game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
