Prep girls basketball roundup: Templeton wins tight game against Santa Ynez to open Los Padres League play

Templeton 58, Santa Ynez 56

Templeton’s Annie Elterman drained a three-point shot with about 40 seconds to play to give the Eagles a one-point lead over league foe Santa Ynez on Tuesday night at home. Elterman’s team-leading 12th point of the night was enough to give Templeton (4-2, 1-0 Los Padres League) the 58-56 win.

Elterman also had five assists and teammate Shelby Sudbrink chipped in 10 points.

Templeton’s Julia Aurignac finished the game with her fourth double-double of the season, 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Santa Ynez trailed 21-20 at halftime before Templeton opened up a 42-31 lead at the end of the third quarter. The Pirates snuck back into the game because of Templeton’s turnovers and foul trouble.

Templeton travels to Morro Bay on Thursday.

Santa Maria 55, Morro Bay 37

The Morro Bay girls basketball team dropped its Los Padres League opener with a 55-37 loss to Santa Maria on Tuesday night.

Genesis Gomez had a season-high 9 points for Morro Bay and played aggressive defensively all game, according to head coach Bill Vedrin.

Senior Julia Fonterbel went wire-to-wire and finished with eight points and 11 rebounds. Juliana Ruef pitched in with seven points, three assists and also drew the tough defensive assignment of guarding Santa Maria’s sharp shooter Sarah Galiciao.

Sophomore Leana Delacruz kept up her consistency with eight points. The Pirates hung around before going cold in the last few minutes of the third, Vedrin said.

Morro Bay (3-5, 0-1 LPL) hosts Templeton at home Thursday.

Coast Union 34, Shandon 16

Reagan Kniffen had a team-high 13 points, five steals and two blocks and Olivia Hargear had six points and four rebounds in the Broncos’ win. It was Coast Union’s first of the season and first league win. The Broncos play Maricopa on Friday at Maricopa.

Coastal Christian 31, Maricopa 15

Melody Parker had 15 points and Delaney Springer had eight in the Conquerors’ victory. It was the league opener for Coastal Christian (4-0, 1-0 Coast Valley League), which plays Shandon on Friday.
