Belgium Captain Makes Massive Club Move After World Cup: Report
Belgium captain Youri Tielemans is reportedly suiting up for another variant of Red Devil.
“Manchester United are set to finalize a deal to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa due to the midfielder's £35 million release clause,” The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported Monday, July 13 “Tielemans is under contract until June 2028 and Villa have no desire to sell him, having offered him new terms months ago, but they have little choice because of the mechanism.”
£35 million equates to approximately $46.7 million, for American soccer fans.
Should the deal finalize, it will mark Tielemans’ third move within the English Premier League since joining Leicester City from Monaco in 2019. The 29-year-old midfielder has been with Villa since 2023. This past season, Tielemans helped Villa capture its first trophy since the 1995-96 Leagues Cup by winning Europa League.
Tielemans was also fantastic at the 2026 FIFA men’s World Cup.
While he and Belgium had an underwhelming showing in the group stage, the Red Devils still won Group G. And when it looked even bleaker in the Round of 32, as Belgium trailed 2-0 against Senegal into the 85th minute, Tielemans saved the day.
Romelu Lukaku scored in the 86th minute, and Tielemans found the equalizer in the 89th minute to force extra time. In the dying moments of extra time, Tielemans buried a penalty to win it.
Belgium then handed the United States a 4-1 humiliation in the Round of 16 to set up a showdown with Spain in the quarterfinal. Unfortunately, Tielemans suffered an injury during warm-up and missed the match. Spain won, 2-1, sending Belgium home.
“This World Cup journey ends for us unfortunately,” Tielemans posted on Instagram. “So proud of this team. Thank you [Belgian flag emoji].”
