Steelers Face New AFC North Problems After Ravens, Bengals, Browns Upgrades
The Pittsburgh Steelers weren't the only AFC North team to make key upgrades to their roster. As always, the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, and Cleveland Browns made significant moves that added more pressure on Pittsburgh. Some of these transactions could have long-term ramifications while also providing immediate benefits. Most importantly, they have the potential to give the Steelers major problems when they face their divisional rivals in 2026.
Each team made a key move that could help it match up better against the Steelers this season. Pittsburgh has consistently drafted well and found ways to compete within the AFC North. However, the Mike Tomlin era, which once dominated the division, is over. Now, Mike McCarthy must prepare the Steelers to adjust to three major AFC North transactions in 2026.
Baltimore Ravens: Trey Hendrickson
The Ravens came close to acquiring Maxx Crosby. However, Baltimore backed out of a trade agreement that it could not be forced to honor. Regardless of the questionable business decision, the Ravens benefited from a lighter-than-expected market for Trey Hendrickson and landed him at a reasonable price. In the process, they preserved the draft capital they would have spent on a potential Crosby trade.
Hendrickson gives the Ravens the proven pass-rushing specialist they desperately needed. He also provides an opportunity for young pass rushers like Mike Green and Zion Young to continue developing for the future. The ripple effects of the nixed Crosby trade could ultimately change the trajectory of the Ravens' defense. As a result, the Steelers must prepare for the challenges ahead.
Cincinnati Bengals: Dexter Lawrence II
The Bengals' defense has struggled for quite some time. Although the Dexter Lawrence II trade comes with some questions, one thing remains clear: Cincinnati acquired an elite defender. Lawrence doesn't just fill a single position need; his presence has the potential to elevate the entire defense. The Bengals also signed Jonathan Allen in free agency, and he should benefit from Lawrence's arrival.
Cincinnati also has a trio of promising edge defenders. Myles Murphy continues to develop, and the Bengals selected Cashius Howell in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft. While Shemar Stewart endured a difficult rookie season, it remains too early to determine his long-term outlook. Lawrence's presence should strengthen not only the front seven but also the secondary which has been quietly retooled and now has a fighting chance.
Cleveland Browns: KC Concepcion
Yes, the Browns appear to be heading back toward their familiar struggles. However, they also made some impressive selections in the 2026 NFL Draft. They then traded away Myles Garrett for a significant haul. Jared Verse came over in the deal as well, but the Los Angeles Rams retained the better edge defender they had to pair with Garrett. KC Concepcion, though, could become a massive draft steal.
Concepcion possesses a rare ability to change gears, create separation on his own, and make a game-changing play at any moment. He has struggled with drops at times, but he remains a legitimate offensive weapon who can complement Jerry Jeudy. He also has the potential to become a dynamic punt returner.
The Browns don't have many strengths to rely on right now. However, Concepcion is a receiver who could become a long-term contributor and a Pro Bowl-caliber player for years to come.
