Civilian Drone Interrupts California Firefighting Efforts

On Sunday, July 12, 2026, the Sierra County Sheriff's Department issued a statement regarding illegal drone activity hindering wildland firefighting efforts on the Elephant Fire.

North of Truckee, near Loyalton, California, the Elephant Fire is still burning and has affected more than 6,400 acres, as of Monday, July 13.

On Sunday, aerial firefighting efforts were temporarily grounded after a civilian illegally flew a drone in the area. Another citizen reported the drone to the Sierra County Sheriff's Department, which, along with public information, helped identify the individual operating it.

Preliminary investigations found that the drone was operated in a manner that interfered with active firefighting and flown at an altitude exceeding the legal operational limits for that type of craft.

It was also flown within an airspace closed under a Temporary Flight Restriction established for wildfire suppression. You can read the Sierra County Sheriff's Department's full statement below.

It should go without saying, but the Sierra County Sheriff's Department reminds folks that flying a drone near an active wildfire is dangerous and illegal. Even a short interruption of firefighting efforts can place firefighters and the public at greater risk.

An active investigation of the incident is currently underway. Once completed, the Sierra County District Attorney's Office will review the case and consider applicable criminal charges for the individual flying the drone. These will be further coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration, which has jurisdiction over federal aviation violations.

As wildfires burn across much of the American West right now, with significant consequences, the efforts of firefighting units should not be taken lightly. While evacuations aren't currently in place for the Elephant Fire, other fires across the West have already had dire impacts on local infrastructure, ski areas, towns, and public lands.
