Yaxel Lendeborg Gets Props as a ‘High-Impact Player' in Summer League

Yaxel Lendeborg of the Golden State Warriors arrived at summer league carrying a little rust, a little frustration and the kind of physical baggage nobody wants when the cameras turn on.

During Michigan’s championship run, Lendeborg sprained his ankle and picked up a bone bruise in his knee, sidelining him for more than a month and putting a dent in the pre-draft routine that usually helps prospects. He admitted this week that he’s not in peak shape yet, and it’s shown in spots. There have been stretches where the legs look heavy, where the defensive intensity comes and goes where the engine sounds like it needs some help.

But the good stuff is still very much there.

After watching Summer League, Lendeborg seems like the player teams thought they were getting: a strong, athletic wing who can bully smaller defenders, switch across positions and make plays without hogging the ball. The offense has been the headline. The shot has looked comfortable.

In his summer league opener against the Los Angeles Lakers on July 4, Lendeborg went a ridiculous 4-for-4 from three. Afterward, he said he believes he can shoot "37% plus" from deep in the NBA.

That number is doing a lot of work, but the confidence behind it matters. If Lendeborg can become a reliable floor spacer while keeping the physical edge that made him such a problem at Michigan, he suddenly fits almost anywhere.

“Lendeborg looks like the high-impact, powerful, ready-made 6-9 versatile wing he was projected to be, and, if he keeps hitting his 3s, he will be an additive in all lineup combinations,” Anthony Slater of ESPN notes.

July basketball never tells the whole story. But Lendeborg has been hard to ignore, and that’s usually a pretty good sign.
