Keaton Wagler Overcomes Nerves to Impress at Summer League
Kobe Wagler got the first-game jitters out of the way, which is probably the most real thing a rookie can do when he finally steps onto an NBA floor for the first time.
The Los Angeles Clippers' top draft pick since Blake Griffin in 2009 looked like a player feeling the weight of the moment during his Las Vegas summer league debut Thursday night. The shots weren't falling, but Wagler never looked rattled for long. He knew what went wrong, and he got right back to work.
“I’d definitely say at the beginning, just a little nervous,” he told ESPN. That’s honest.

After the game, Wagler spent time with Clippers coaches, breaking down the details and looking for ways to settle himself in faster. The shooting wasn't where he wanted it to be in the team's 91-85 loss to Sacramento, but the bigger takeaway was how he handled the moment. The game sped up, he adjusted and he treated the rough debut like a lesson instead of a setback.
Then came Sunday, and the nerves seemed to loosen their grip. It was empowering.
Wagler looked far more comfortable against the Jazz, leading the Clippers with 23 points and four assists in a 104-82 win. The jumper started behaving, the decision-making looked cleaner and the confidence that made him such an intriguing prospect began showing up here and there.
The Clippers are also staring at a potential roster shift, with the team still expecting the Kawhi Leonard trade to Toronto to move forward once the NBA’s investigation is complete. If that deal goes through, Wagler could have a chance to grow through real minutes.

The first night was tough. That’s summer league. But by the end of the week, Wagler looked like someone who had already started figuring out how to handle his new role.
