Baseball playoffs roundup: Foothill, Laguna Beach, Irvine move on to CIF-SS semifinals
Evrett Rycroft and Grady Wright combined to allow no earned runs and just three hits for Foothill in a 3-1 win over Yucaipa in the CIF-SS Division 2 quarterfinals Friday at Foothill High.
Rycroft was the winning pitcher for Foothill (20-11) and allowed one unearned run in five innings with three hits allowed. Wright pitched two perfect innings with a strikeout to get the save.
Evan Kim went 2 for 4 with a double and Jason Gugino had two hits. Presley Gaborno and Jaxon Foshay each drove in a run and Foshay added two hits.
The Knights will play Loyola in the semifinals Tuesday. Loyola beat Alemany 3-0 in its quarterfinal game on Friday.
Foothill most recently reached a CIF-SS championship game in 2018 and most recently won a championship in 2006.

In Division 1:
Harvard-Westlake 2, Cypress 1: Cypress scored in the first inning but failed to score again in a loss to Harvard-Westlake.
After back-to-back singles by Ivan Ortiz and Tyler Vladic, Cal State Fullerton signee Noah Johnson hit a run-scoring single to give the Centurions a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
TCU commit Tate Belfanti allowed two runs in six innings with six strikeouts for Cypress. Jake De LaQuil and Vladic each had two hits for Cypress and De LaQuil stole a base.
Cypress (23-9) beat Oaks Christian in pool play and beat Sierra Canyon 8-0 on Tuesday.
In Division 3:
Agoura 4, Fullerton 1: Fullerton's offense could only muster three hits in a loss to Agoura on the road.
Declan Fitzgerald allowed three earned runs in 5⅔ innings for Fullerton (17-13) and had seven strikeouts. Calin Williams drove in Fullerton's lone run of the game in the seventh inning on a RBI groundout.
Fullerton tied for second place in the Empire League this season and beat San Juan Hills and Corona del Mar in the first two rounds of the playoffs.
In Division 4:
Glendora 4, Canyon 3: Canyon stranded the bases loaded in the sixth inning and stranded 10 runners on base in the game in a close loss to Glendora.
Ethan Smith, John Somerndike and Blake Lau drove in runs for Canyon (16-15). Matt Simons and Spencer Mayfield combined for four innings of scoreless relief with just one hit allowed and four strikeouts.
Grand Terrace 4, Marina 1: Marina couldn't overcome four errors by its defense in a loss to Grand Terrace.
All four runs Marina (15-16) allowed were unearned and the Vikings failed to score after scoring in the first inning.
Max Conde went 2 for 3 with a RBI for Marina. Elijah Herald and Dylan Dibenedetto had hits for the Vikings.
Laguna Beach 6, Moorpark 4: Eight players had hits for Laguna Beach in a road win over Moorpark.
Parker Moore went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Jackson Arrasin drove in two runs. Dylan Yencho and Jacob Wicker each doubled and drove in a run. Aaron Crosby allowed one earned fun in four innings with five strikeouts and Yencho had three strikeouts in three scoreless innings.
Laguna Beach (19-11) will host Grand Terrace in the semifinals on Tuesday.
In Division 5:
Irvine 2, Cathedral 1: Roshan Patel and Jason Alderson were excellent on the mound for Irvine in a road win over Cathedral.
Patel had seven strikeouts and allowed one run in five innings for Irvine (17-13) and Alderson pitched two perfect innings of relief.
Owen Song went 2 for 2 with a triple, a stolen base and a RBI for the Vaqueros. Smith Spivey had a double with a RBI.
Irvine will play at Kaiser in the semifinals on Tuesday.
In Division 8:
Rancho Alamitos 4, Chadwick 2: Ethan Shepherd had two hits and pitched three innings of scoreless relief to get the save for Rancho Alamitos in a home win over Chadwick.
Henry Garcia went 2 for 3 with a double and a RBI. Aidan Martinez went 2 for 2 with a stolen base and two RBIs. Jacob Neri allowed one earned run in four innings with three strikeouts to get the win.
Rancho Alamitos (14-11) will host Oxford Academy in the semifinals Tuesday.
Oxford Academy 7, Cornerstone Christian 6: Oxford Academy withstood a late rally by Cornerstone Christian to advance to the semifinals.
Cornerstone Christian had the tying run on second base with one out after already scoring two runs in the seventh inning. Logan Lavoie drew a ground out and struck out the last batter of the game to finish the game for Oxford Academy (12-18).
Sora Suzuki went 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. Lavoie, Adrian Mejia and Brendan Lee each singled and drove in runs for the Patriots.
In Division 9:
Temecula Prep 6, Santiago 3: Benjamin Barreto had two hits with a triple and a RBI for Santiago in a home loss to Temecula Prep.
Matthew Rubin had two hits for Santiago. Jairo Camino and Kingston Loera each had a hit and scored a run.
Santiago (10-17) beat Gorman Charger and St. Pius X-St. Matthias in the first two rounds.
