College notebook: SRJC duo in top 10 at state track and field championships
Two men's athletes from Santa Rosa Junior College recorded top-10 finishes against the state's best at the California Community College Athletic Association's track and field championships last week in Southern California.
SRJC freshman Charly Ramirez, a Casa Grande grad, placed seventh overall in the pole vault, clearing 13 feet, 9.25 inches. Sophomore Jared Hayes, out of Piner, placed seventh overall in the 800-meter race with a time of 1 minute, 55.02 seconds.
Bear Cubs freshman Mahdi Camara, a Cardinal Newman grad, rounded out the local contingent with an 11th-place finish in the discus (130-00).
SRJC softball
Sophomore Bear Cubs catcher Angel Amesa was named to the CCCAA championship All-Tournament team after SRJC's Cinderella run in the state playoffs.
In their first appearance in the state championship tournament since 1982, the Bear Cubs were one of the final four teams left. Their season ended in a 9-2 loss to Saddleback, which went on to finish as runners-up to state champion Palomar.
SRJC sophomore Kylee Bauman, an Analy grad, also earned All-American honors as a first-team North Region selection. On the year, Bauman led the Bear Cubs in home runs (18), RBIs (47), runs scored (57) and OPS (1.431). She also had 11 doubles, 56 hits and drew a team-best 25 walks with just 13 strikeouts in 136 at-bats.
