SLO Triathlon canceled after 40 years to prevent coronavirus spread

The 2020 SLO Triathlon has been canceled due to concerns about the spread of coronavirus.

The sporting event was originally scheduled to take place on July 26, the city of San Luis Obispo said in a news release.

In the release, the city said that putting on the SLO Triathlon, which has been held for 40 consecutive years, “requires months of planning and preparation.” The annual event features a half-mile swim, 14-mile bicycle ride and a run of more than three miles.

During the COVID-19 emergency, San Luis Obispo officials said their primary focus is on “providing essential services to protect the health and safety of the community.”

The city called off the event to ensure a safe event for participants, community, volunteers, staff and sponsors, according to the release.

“We want to thank our community for their continued support and recognition of the importance of slowing the spread of COVID-19 in our community,” San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation director Greg Avakian said. “Similar to other large sporting events, we are canceling the SLO Triathlon until next year. We are looking forward to coming together as a community for the event in 2021.”
