Keep guns out of the hands of those who would misuse them

Matthew Hoy is entitled to his opinion about California’s new gun laws (Viewpoint “Finally, some pushback against Sacramento’s ‘war’ on guns,” Aug. 20), but his apparently ideological-based conviction that these laws “will not stop a singe instance of ‘gun violence’ ” still rubs me the wrong way.

Does he really mean that a background check on the purchase of ammunition might not discover some mental health problem meriting withholding ammunition from somebody who could use it in a deranged fashion? Even if it is just one or two instances?

The dimension of gun violence requires the practicality of doing anything that might work, whether it is the big task of fighting terrorism or the smaller task of trying to keep firearms out of the hands of those who would misuse them.
