The real hazard of the Hazard Peak trail

The Hike of the Week article on the Hazard Peak trail (“Hike of the Week: Montaña De Oro’s Hazard Peak features ocean views, canyon vistas,” July 18) glossed over the real hazard of the trail.

The writer warned hikers to “Keep your ears open for mountain bikers, who should be equipped with a bell.”

In my many hikes on the trail, no biker has had a bell. One has to be fully alert for downhill bikers going full speed silently around blind curves.

Technically, hikers have the right of way on the trail.

But I would advise any hiker to be on the lookout for speeding bikers and be prepared to stand off the trail when they are spotted.
