Orchestra Novo concert in San Luis Obispo was a great treat

“A Triumphant Heart,” the Orchestra Novo concert on May 29 featuring the brilliant, young pianist, Marika Bournaki, was enormously gratifying to the large, enthusiastic audience at the PAC.

This concert was really a multimedia show! Gary Lamprect’s Vocal Arts Ensemble joined the orchestra in performing John Williams’ “Hymn to the Fallen,” which we recognized as the theme to the movie “Saving Private Ryan,” performed as a tribute to our military. The concert then featured the pictures painted by the Grizzly Youth Academy students while they had been listening to Ravel’s “Pavane for a Dead Princess.” They were shown on a huge screen behind Marika as she played the “Pavane” on the piano as the orchestra played Ravel’s orchestration of this melancholy, meditative piece. (The actual pictures were also exhibited in the foyer of the PAC where we could see them up close before the concert and during intermission). The concert then crescendoed to a victorious climax with the Schumann Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54, which Marika powered through with incredible alacrity and technique to spare!

All who attended were rewarded with music they will always remember, thanks to Michael Nowak and his enterprising programming and musicality. Those interested in upcoming events and next year’s concert series can visit OrchestraNovo.org.
