The Lost at Sea ceremony for Memorial Day was a very serious and solemn event attended by hundreds, including dignitaries. The ceremony included the North County Chorus singing the Navy Hymn. There were tributes to those lost at sea, with a tolling of the ship’s bell.
At the end of the Cayucos Pier, the Marine Corps Honor Guard posted the colors, a piper and drummer added to the ceremony, and a floral wreath was cast into the ocean. Many had touched the wreath in remembrance of those they knew who were lost at sea.
The Morro Bay Harbor Patrol and the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office provided boats in honor. The Warbirds made a dramatic flyover as well! Soon, the flowers from the wreath began to separate and floated on the water — a very impressive sense and feeling to those watching!
The committee had worked to make sure this tribute was proper in every respect: A special thanks and appreciation must go to Lt. Ron Janney of the Navy and his dedicated staff! After the ceremony, people told me how impressed and touched they were at the whole service and so grateful to all who made this possible.
