Winston Churchill once said, “democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried.”
The word democracy is derived from the Greek words for people and power. In the beginning, it was a pure form, everyone who could vote would vote on everything.
In modern society, this is not feasible so we have a representative democracy. This means that we elect a person who will vote the way that we (the majority) would like them to vote.
This does not seem to be the case in the San Luis Obispo County’s 5th District. During this past year, there was a serious issue in front of the board of supervisors. It was obvious to me that the majority of the constituents at the meeting were opposed to the issue, and I naively assumed that my elected representative would vote accordingly. This was not to be, and Debbie Arnold’s vote was cast in favor of a very bad idea. My vote will not be in favor of the incumbent in the 5th District.
