As we are being bombarded by political ads run by candidates competing for the 24th District Congressional seat, I’m reminded of the deceptive ad run by Lois Capps in the last election cycle.
The one where she aired a portion of an interview by her opponent, Chris Mitchum, and cut him off in mid-sentence to clearly distort what he actually said in the complete interview.
Mitchum sued Capps, however, it turns out that campaign advertising is protected under “free speech,” but not regulated by “truth in advertising.” Some of the current attack ads have a similar feel to them — clearly someone is trying to distort the truth.
