Planting appropriate trees in a park, as described in a recent Tribune article about The Arroyo Grande Tree Guild, is a good idea (“Arroyo Grande kids get rooted in city’s eco efforts,” May 4). Sending children home from an Arbor Day event with redwood trees that require a lot of water and may become too large for most residential yards is not.

Imagine, for example, if an animal welfare group held a dog appreciation day and gave each child in attendance a St. Bernard or Great Dane puppy.
