‘Religious freedom’ laws are the true attack on basic freedoms

In her letter (“Law infringes on religious rights,” April 15), Nichole Landon decries the violation of our “basic American freedoms,” meaning the First Amendment right to “freedom of religion” while failing to mention the corresponding right to “freedom from religion,” as well as the 14th Amendment provision of the right to “equal protection under the law.”

The Mississippi “religious freedom” law makes religious-based discrimination legal, denying the LGBT community (and all people) their right of equal protection. Passage of these laws by state governments constitutes an “establishment of religion” and represents the true attack on our “basic American freedoms.”
