SLO should watch how it uses fees and fines to fill its coffers
We live in a fear-based society, encouraged by past administrations and current presidential candidates. This has trickled down to our local city government, with exorbitant fines being given for off-leash dog walking, regardless of the dog’s behavior.
I encourage local government to heed the warning of the U.S. Justice Department (“Justice Dept. warns local courts about unlawful fines, fees,” March 16), asking local courts to be wary of how they target certain populations with fees and fines to fill their coffers. This is an opportunity for the city to be progressive and proactive and consider expanding off-leash dog areas, such as at the unfenced dog park at Laguna Lake and adjacent open space.
