On the eve of the “Super Tuesday” primary, I found myself dismayed by the prominence of such a candidate as Donald Trump. This man has never demonstrated anything like statesmanship, wisdom or integrity.

I doubt that he entered this race with any serious belief that he could become the president of the United States. But however far he got would only benefit him in his self-aggrandizement and notoriety. His front-runner status in the Republican Party is a clear indication of how far that party has fallen from a position of being a contributor to our country’s governance. Under the leadership of Mitch McConnell and John Boehner, the Republican Party has devoted itself to making sure that nothing the Obama administration proposed would be successful.

The Republicans thus became the party of poor government and dysfunction and now find themselves represented by Donald Trump. Such a terrible development for us all.

Tom Robinson, San Luis Obispo
