Lack of affordable housing in SLO County affects us all
The League of Women Voters commends John Fowler and the other community leaders who wrote in support of various ways to make housing more affordable in San Luis Obispo County (Jan. 28, “SLO County needs a variety of tools to increase supply of lower-cost homes”).
We support density bonuses and use of the inclusionary zoning ordinance to increase the housing supply. We urge county government to re-examine the in-lieu fees of building affordable housing now in place and to consider raising them as one way to address the serious lack of affordable housing for workers, seniors, and low- and moderate-income residents. The lack of affordable housing negatively impacts not only our local economy, but also our environment and general quality of life.
