Letters to the Editor

Stuttering help is available in Spanish, too

I was pleased to read the letter to the editor “Resources available for children with speech problems” by Edward Herrington (Jan. 13). I was glad Mr. Herrington mentioned that the website of The Stuttering Foundation (www.stutteringhelp.org) provides a brochure, “Special Education Law and Children Who Stutter,” that explains this little-known benefit of every child in the U.S. with any kind of speech problem having the right to free speech therapy.

The Stuttering Foundation also has a great Spanish-language version of its website at www.tartamudez.org; “tartamudez” is the Spanish word for “stuttering.” The Stuttering Foundation’s outreach to the Hispanic community in the U.S. is very important because there is no other such resource for Spanish-speaking people in this country. Tartamudez.org of course helps adult Hispanics who stutter as well through the many free resources offered.

Personally, this website gives me much satisfaction because it is also used by many many people in Latin American countries where speech services are a long way from being up-to-date.
