Thank you, Tribune, for the front-page coverage of Cuesta College faculty picketing the opening day of spring semester. My daughter attends Cuesta College, as did I when I was her age. While teaching part-time at Cuesta for 16 years, I feel especially fortunate to work alongside instructors who teach, counsel, guide and inspire their students to pursue their goals despite financial restraints and personal tribulations.
When I see our school board trustees and president balk at paying a fair wage to these dedicated individuals who remain committed to offering our students a first-class education, my thoughts return to a quote by Martin Luther King Jr.: “Intelligence plus character — that is the goal of true education.”
I believe our Cuesta College leaders to be intelligent; now, it is time for them to show character. No more subterfuge, excuses or time-worn machinations to deceive the public — just fair pay for excellent work.
