The Public Forum in Morro Bay regarding the proposal to install 100 windmills off the Central Coast couldn’t be timelier, especially on the heels of the United Nations Climate Talks in Paris.
Here is a wonderful opportunity to significantly decrease our carbon consumption locally and help in the effort to stop catastrophic climate change. Trident Winds of Seattle reported that the windmill project would provide renewable energy for up to 300,000 homes.
The Paris Agreement calls for “holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels, recognizing that this would significantly reduce the risks and impacts of climate change.” Yet, the plans submitted by the 186 nations would probably result in an increase above 3 degrees Celsius.
The United States can provide leadership to increase international commitments by enacting a steadily increasing fee on carbon-based fuels. Returning all revenues to households would allow us to set a price high enough to attain the desired decrease in greenhouse gas emissions.
