Thanks to teachers Marc Townsend and Lauren Knuttila and Principal John Calandro of Laguna Middle School (“San Luis Obispo students share ways to help refugees,” Dec. 15). Your focus on the epidemic of global refugees uses current issues as teachable moments and makes curriculum relevant.
It is essential that students understand not only the causes of mass migrations, but also what they as individuals can do to minimize the impact of resource depletion, economic chaos, and political and religious strife.
When we empower students, they not only learn, but they also become competent citizens of the world. That is what great teaching and learning looks like.
